Unglazed matt tiles have been used for fireplace hearths since early Victorian times. They are still very popular as a hearth tile for period Victorian and Edwardian reproduction fireplaces and especially now for stove hearths.

The tiles we use are a porcelain bodied tile, with an extremely durable surface. These quarry tiles are one of the few products that you will ever but for your home that will look better in 50 years time!
Frequently asked questions
Are quarry tiles good for fireplace hearths?
Yes. Unglazed matt quarry tiles have been used for fireplace hearths since early Victorian times and remain a popular choice for period reproduction fireplaces and for stove hearths. The tiles we use are porcelain bodied with an extremely durable surface.

What is the difference between quarry tiles and terracotta?
The terms overlap and are often used loosely. Traditional terracotta is a softer, more porous fired clay. The quarry tiles we supply are porcelain bodied, which makes them denser and harder wearing, and better suited to a hearth that takes real heat and the occasional dropped ember. Both are unglazed, so both develop character with age rather than showing damage.

Can quarry tiles be posted?
Only in small quantities, because of the weight. We cannot post the large 297mm quarry tiles at all, so those are either pallet delivery or collection from the Stockport area. See our delivery and collection page for details.
