These sets of decorative fireplace tiles are designed to fit in cast iron fireplace inserts from the late Victorian period through to the first world war. They are usually in sets of 10 fireplace tiles but some are provided with spacer tiles, usually either 6 inches x 2 inch or 6 inches x 3 inch.
The fireplace tiles can also be incorporated into slabbed panels to fit either side of a ‘canopy on legs’ style of fireplace. Here the decorative fireplace tiles are framed by plain tiles in various colours and sizes and the whole panel straddles the gap between the canopy and the fireplace mantel, usually angled back into the chimney breast.
The background of these tiles is just as hand glazed as the flower pictures so it is almost impossible to match colours to a background glaze.
Traditionally it would be the decorative colours of the flowers and leaves that would be used around the tiles rather than the background.See also: running tile sets and replacement fireplace tiles.
